Year 1

Hello and welcome to the Year 1 page. In Year 1, we aim to create a rich and creative learning environment to enable all to achieve. We have a work hard, play hard attitude in our classroom, where children are challenged to develop a can do attitude and achieve their very best.

Below is an outline of our topics for this term and key days to remember for homework and PE. If you have any queries or questions about your child in year 1, please do not hesitate to contact me via the school office. Many Thanks

Autumn Term

Our class book for this term will be Meerkat Mail and this will link to our topic ‘Explorers’. Children will be discussing the meaning of the word explore and finding out about explorers from the past and present including Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong. Any work at home will be greatly received, if any children wish to do their own research.

We will be using our scientific knowledge to learn about materials. This will include categorising materials, looking at their properties and carrying out tests to show their differences. This will also link to our topic and children will be making boats out of different materials to see which material is best to use.

This term, PE will be on a Monday and Thursday. PE kits are to be in school every day so they are available for any extra PE sessions that may happen.

Reading books will be changed twice a week. Books need to come to school on Monday and a Thursday to be returned home on Tuesday and a Friday. To make the best progress in their reading, we would ask parents to please support children with their reading as best they can as it really does make a difference. Year 1 are also going to be given sight word books to learn and these will be updated regularly. We ask that these are returned along with the reading books on a Monday and Thursday.

Spellings will also be given on a Friday and tested the following Thursday.
