Year 5

We hope you all enjoyed the Easter break and are feeling rested.  I hope all the children are set for the run up to the end of the year, however if your child has any worries or concerns please contact me, either via the office or at the end of the day and I will do my very best to help. We have several exciting learning opportunities planned and we are looking forward to enjoying these. Within the next week, you will find details of our curriculum for the 1st half of the Summer term. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Year 5 curriculum or your child’s learning, again, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Mrs Graham   Assistant Head Teacher and Year 5 Teacher

English

Children will be introduced to stories from other cultures that will elicit ideas and questions with regards to our environment, as well as cultures and stereotyping. We will be reading The Great Kapok Tree, linking our South american topic to our English, in addition to Journey to Johannesburg.Children will be considering themes from other cultures and eras. They will look at the different characters and how their behaviours reflect, and challenge, cultural stereotypes. They will also develop their summarising skills by picking out key information from stories within a story.

Children will be writing in a more formal style as their aim is to try to interweave the religious and cultural references into their writing to persuade. In addition, they will do a lot of work on language and how to use appropriate language in formal writing such as letters and persuasion. We will see a focus on writing with different sentence structures and ensuring that they are using the correct punctuation within each sentence.

Maths

During this half term, Year 5 will use fluency, reasoning and problem solving within lessons. During Week 1, we will focus on Place value; Week 2, we will be comparing and ordering fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number; Week 3, we will focus on solving problems involving converting between units of time; Week 4  we will investigate rounding decimal numbers; Week 5, we will solve addition and subtraction multi-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why.
